Flawed human nature seems to play a groovy role in her breakdown. John, the main characters husband, a noted physician, is opposed to admit that on that point really might be something terms with his wife. This same attitude may be seen in her brother, who is in any case a physician.
While this attitude, and the actions interpreted because of it, certai nly contributed to her breakdown; it seems to me that there is a rebellion record in her. Perhaps unconsciously she seems determined to prove them wrong. As the story begins, the woman - whose key we never learn - tells of her drop-off and how it is dismissed by her husband and brother.
